Job Description

Summary of Position:

The Controller is responsible for managing all financial and accounting functions, including budgeting, cash management, forecasting, financial management and reporting, analysis, audit, GL, payroll, AR, and AP (for both the Association and Foundation). This person has solid communication, technology, analytical and management skills in addition to possessing knowledge of all aspects of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Planning, directing and coordinating all accounting operational functions. Initially this position will be fully responsible for all such activities. Future growth will include the assessment of the need for relevant accounting staff.
  • Managing the accumulation and consolidation of all financial data necessary for an accurate accounting of business results. This includes the posting of cash receipts, cash disbursements, journal entries and retention of all relevant documentation. Provide timely payment and/or information to vendors and internal customers to maintain uninterrupted service and credibility while managing the cash flow of the organization. NAMA's accounting system is Microsoft Dynamics GP.
  • Preparation of semi-monthly payroll utilizing Paylocity online system.
  • Coordinating and preparing internal and external financial statements in conjunction with the CFO and for distribution to department managers, senior management, and the boards of the Association and the Foundation. This includes performing all necessary month-end closing procedures, i.e. journal entry preparation, account analysis, reconcilement to outside systems, etc. and review of variances with department managers.
  • Coordinating activities of external auditors, from preparing to fieldwork to draft audit report review.
  • Providing management with information vital to the decision-making process, including historical references, contractual relationships, etc.
  • Managing the budget process with the department managers and utilizing Dynamic Budgets, an add-on to Microsoft Dynamics GP.
  • Assessing current accounting operations, offering recommendations for improvement and implementing new processes. Includes the re-assessment and adjustment where necessary from time-to-time.
  • Evaluating accounting and internal control systems and recommendations for adjustment where needed.
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of accounting software and supporting databases, as needed
  • Developing and monitoring business performance metrics as required by the boards of the Association and the Foundation.
  • Overseeing regulatory reporting, including tax and state reporting compliance, both at the Federal, state and municipality levels. Advises CFO of actions and potential risks.
  • Hiring, training and retaining skilled accounting staff.

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance along with 7-10 years of progressive Accounting or Finance experience.
  • Must be flexible, analytical, highly detail-minded, organized and responsive to requests and deadlines.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office software; specifically, advanced Excel skills; Microsoft Dynamics GP experience a plus. Solid knowledge of accounting and other business-related software.
