Job Description

This is an Indirect Tax Research profile. We are looking for an individual with proven expertise in tax research and/or experience in indirect taxes mainly in the beverage alcohol space and/ or with experience in VAT, GST, Sales and use tax.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced business professional with strong academic credentials and strong indirect tax knowledge. The individual will be dynamic, energetic, team-oriented and have demonstrated adaptability to change through periods of rapid growth.

In this role, the candidate should be able to analyze and interpret tax laws, tax return guidelines, understand the changes and be able to summarize and/or expand the information reported upon request and follow the process and deadlines to integrate those laws into the Avalara products. In order to acquire/maintain the most current/accurate/timely tax information, the candidate must perform intensive research and be up to date on all of the latest tax news. In addition, the candidate needs to have good analytical skills and be a good communicator verbally and in writing.

The candidate will work closely with other members of the local US team, as well as with Pune & U.K team members. Although not required daily, the candidate must be flexible to overlap work timings with Pune/UK time zones.

Job Description:

Research, review, and communicate state requirements as they pertain to beverage alcohol shipping and sales on a state-by-state basis.
Research and answer complex questions regarding beverage alcohol compliance.
Provide industry and compliance expertise as it relates to projects and content maintenance tasks
Monitor and communicate legislation, administrative decisions, and judicial decisions for changes in beverage alcohol shipping compliance.
Manage compliance and returns form changes including new forms, obsolete forms, and content changes to forms.
Collaborate with engineering team to implement state requirement changes in beverage alcohol compliance software
Identify blockers and impediments and propose solutions
Validate results of test scenarios
Create citations and annotations
Build productive working relationships with state, county, and local authorities to obtain valuable information and maximize the quality of our product
Self-manage and prioritize dynamic projects and maintenance tasks to deliver quality content within a reasonable and appropriate time frame
Collaborate with team members and cross-team partners to delivery holistic beverage alcohol compliance solutions
Provide peer review and feedback
Identify opportunities to automate, streamline, and reduce redundancy in current processes.


Our ideal candidate will have:

MBA, JD/LLM in Law, ATT or CTA in Tax (or local tax qualifications in country of origin), and/or CPA/Chartered Accountant or similar in that order of preference

A natural curiosity about technology and an interest in innovation and learning about new areas of taxation and licensing compliance
Combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree and 5+ years of experience
Highly developed communication skills (verbal and written)

Maintain a high level of energy and positivity while being consistently dependable, efficient, and accurate
Highly organized time-management skills
Analytic ability to understand and resolve client requests and tax concerns

Demonstrated high standards of excellence in work product and professionalism

Preferred Qualifications:

Relevant degree in area of law, taxation, accounting, finance, economics, etc.
Familiarity with state and local tax laws, government compliance, and/or tax returns
Familiarity with the beverage alcohol industry and/or winery/brewery/distillery business operations and compliance
Familiarity with Confluence, JIRA, and drafting guidance documentation
Experience with conditional statements and / or formulas in Excel and familiarity with Boolean logic
Experience with citations and annotations
