Job Description

Meadowview of Johnston, a brand-new senior community under construction in Johnston, Iowa, is hiring a Culinary Director/Chef to join our team. With the support of the home office dietitians, you will direct the overall operations of the Culinary Services department to ensure quality food and nutritional services are provided to our residents. You will also ensure our residents receive a first-class dining experience through supervising and staffing exceptional dietary aides and cooks.

Meadowview of Johnston will have 106-unitsfor residents including independent living (46-units), assisted living (39-units), and memory care (21-units) options. A top suburb of Des Moines, Johnston is vibrant and known for annual festivals, music, and togetherness.

Our ideal candidate will have 2-3+ years of culinary experience and 1+ year of supervisor experience (preferably in food services). This person will have a willingness to use creativity in making menus, and a desire to work with other departments to ensure high food and dining quality. Preferred candidates will have a Culinary Degree, Associate Degree, or certification in Food Science, nutrition, dietetics, or related field.

This is a Full-Time, benefit eligible position.

Culinary Director/Chef responsibilities:

  • Ensure appropriate nutritional care is provided to all residents.
  • Communicate effectively with staff, residents, families, and vendors to ensure top-notch satisfaction.
  • Coordinate with home office dietitians to plan meals at the facility.
  • Oversee daily operations of the Culinary Services department.
  • Guarantee meals, snacks, and supplements are planned, prepared, and served to residents in a pleasant atmosphere.
  • Plan menus, order supplies, supervise food production, and manage inventory.
  • Rectify arising problems or complaints from staff, residents, guests and customers
  • Inspect kitchen for conformance to state and federal guidelines as well as company safety and sanitation requirements.
  • Recruit, hire, train and supervise department staff.
  • Prepare employee schedules, maintain attendance records, and approve payroll.
  • Work with the activities department to plan for daily socials.
  • Promote special food events (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, etc.) for residents and guests.
  • Perform additional tasks as required.

Culinary Director/Chef skills and requirements:

  • 2-3+ years of culinary experience required.
  • 1+ year of supervisory experience (preferably in food service) required.
  • Culinary Degree, Associate Degree, or certification in Food Science, nutrition, dietetics, or related field preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to develop and motivate team members to embrace culinary innovations. 
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal food service regulations, preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Scratch and short order cooking in large-scale cooking operation experience.
  • Safety and Sanitation Examination and met the qualifications for Certified Food Protection Professionals (ServSafe) preferred.    
  • Positive team-building and great communication skills.
