Today, we still stubbornly follow the same practices as Alfred Peet himself: Meticulous selectivity at origin, roasting each small batch by hand, and a commitment to delivering coffee to stores obsessively fresh.Peet's is a fast-paced environment, at an extremely exciting time of expansion.The Coffee Quality Manager, reporting to the Manufacturing Director, will work closely with green coffee, roasting, quality, and other cross functional teams to ensure the highest quality level of roasted coffee is consistency produced. The coffee quality manager will use sensory, analytical, and technical knowledge and tools to develop and implement a comprehensive quality system for coffee manufacturing operations that enables continuous improvement. This is a full time, salaried position.Responsible for the development, implementation and maintenance of a comprehensive roasted coffee quality system utilizing sensory science and analytical information within a coffee manufacturing environment.Develop systems/tools and technologies to measure performance of coffee quality in order to identify opportunities for improvement, utilizing appropriate key performance indicators.Work with cross functional teams as the coffee quality expert in the development of new coffees and coffee products.Lead manufacturing trials and the scaling up of new coffees and or equipment taking into consideration established manufacturing production and quality standards. Develop, implement, and maintain quality systems to calibrate coffees roasted at various manufacturing facilities and/or technologies. Include Peets owned and Co-manufacturing.Train cross functional teams on sensory and analytical testing of roasted coffee.Lead the investigation of roasted and green coffee quality related issues. In collaboration with coffee/roasting departments, identify root causes, required corrective actions and assure effective resolutions. Work with cross functional teams to evaluate and/or develop roasting and other coffee processing technologies with the objective of better coffee.Develop and maintain roasted coffee specifications and processing documentation including but not limited to Roaster training materialsConduct research to ensure that the company sustains and advances in industry best practices and technologies within coffee quality. Conduct regular shelf-life studies on roasted ground and whole bean coffee and provide recommendations where appropriate on any changes Contribute to the evaluation and testing of various coffee packaging on shelf life of coffee incorporating new sustainability requirements.Support quality assurance team to ensure roasting operations meet all local and federal food safety requirements.Collaborate with Inventory control team to ensure all reconciliations are timely and accurate. Continue to develop opportunities to improve inventory accuracy in general across impacted departments Communicate with vendors and outside agencies when appropriateResponsible for continuous recruitment, training, and development of a high performing team, including succession planning within your own department while supporting the same requirements within the Roasting department Coffee manufacturing experience (3-5 years)Expert knowledge of coffee roasting and related technologies.Expert knowledge of sensory science in general and coffee sensory in particular.Trained as professional coffee cupper (Licensed Q-Grader) with strong ability to develop and train programs for sensory evaluations.Excellent understanding of quality assurance principles, major food safety requirements and quality systems including NSF, GFSI, BRC, SQF, Good Manufacturing Practices etc.Strong project management skills.Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both orally and in writing.Proven track record of team building and development. Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and able to handle multiple priorities at the same time.Computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office, experience in sensory software and a general mastery of other software required to enable continuous improvement
