Job Description

Our flagship hostel in New York City is seeking an Assistant General Manager. The Assistant General Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Hostel, front desk, back office, housekeeping and maintenance departments, as well as supporting food & beverage operations and assisting the General Manager with budgeting and strategic planning.

Responsibilities

  • Represent the organization’s mission and values through all aspects of operational oversight and team/guest interactions.  
  • Provide strong leadership for hostel team through clear communication of hostel as well as organization wide initiatives and goals.  
  • Assist the General Manager in the implementation and monitoring of financial/operational plans for the hostel, supporting the overall objectives and goals of the organization.  
  • Assist the General manager to prepare financial statements, periodic forecasts, and annual budget to ensure accurate and timely, information. Complete credit card reports, petty cash/checking and PMS reconciliation. 
  • Manage supply inventories assisting the General Manager with budget cost control.
  • Directly manage the front desk, housekeeping, and maintenance functions to ensure a safe, clean, and secure environment for guests, employees, and hostel assets
  • Oversee the guests and reservation functions to ensure superior service is delivered.
  • Receive and resolve guest complaints, respond, and monitor online reviews in accordance with HI Standards.
  • Assist in implementing selling strategies to maximize revenues with HI Revenue Manager through effective use of yield management and collaboration with Group Sales.
  • Walk the property, attend events and be a visible leader to hostellers, employees, vendors, and visitors: solicit feedback, inspect the physical plant and operation, and act appropriately on findings.  
  • Assign duties/initiatives to staff and observe performance to ensure adherence to hostel policies and established operating procedures.
  • Assist the General Manager in conducting the Human Resource function (New Hire Orientations, training, reviewing, approving employee payroll information, employee performance reviews and disciplinary actions) to maintain employee morale and mission delivery.
  • Oversee security function ensuring a safe and secure environment for guests and employees. 
  • Monitor and ensure adherence to all qualify standards: appearance, maintenance, and cleanliness. 
  • In close consultation with General Manger and maintenance chief, ensure preventative maintenance programs are recorded and in place to protect the physical property; continually develop the hostel safety program.  
  • Audit and ensure city agency compliance and permits proactively addressing potential citations, inspections as needed.  
  • Ensure daily front office procedures are performed and reviewed, reconciling daily postings, various general ledger accounts and bank statements to ensure accurate financial information is submitted timely.
  • Coordinate with Community Engagement and External Affairs activities to promote and further the HIUSA Mission.
  • Participate in Hostel manager on duty program, supporting proper supervisor coverage.
  • Embrace and promote the HI USA “Success Through Service” Culture.
  • Perform functions of the General Manager in their absence.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ management experience and bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously
  • Familiarity with hospitality front desk/reservation systems and methods
  • “Guest First” approach
  • Previous revenue management and sales experience
  • Strong computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Basic math and accounting skills including 10 key calculator and reconciliation
  • Staff supervision experience
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively without immediate supervision
  • Conflict resolution skills and ability to act effectively in a crisis, referring to the General Manager when necessary
  • Experience in hospitality operations preferred
  • Must be willing to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as schedule requires
  • First Aid and CPR certification preferred; training can be provided
