Avoid these while posting jobs!

Job adverts at times can be a little tricky if you do not recognize the key areas where there are possibilities of discrimination in gender. It is always better to get educated about these nuances before placing an advertisement. The hospitality industry is a confusing business when it comes to job titles and before publishing the job requirements the recruiter should be crystal about the right path.

In the hospitality industry, almost all job profiles require client or customer interaction. So, at that moment of time, there might be a specific requirement that you have in mind as in who needs to greet and welcome the customers. Although, you carry the clarity of who should greet and welcome the customers/clients you should not be placing an advertisement with clear discrimination in it.

Irrespective of the gender, a company always looks out for staff that is dedicated and punctual toward their work. If you want to post a job and avoid any discrimination in your job advert, then you need to print the right words. Although there are no set of words or phrases that you cannot use while job advertising. But, you should be using your own discretion on what to go in the advert without indicating any discrimination.

  1.     How to avoid sexual discrimination?

Your idea of the venue is to have a specific gender serving, or behind the bar, or the entire staff. But, with this mind, you cannot go place a job ahead with specifications of the gender, such as “waitress”  or “barmaid” as job titles. Keep the advert gender-neutral and be on the right side of the law.

  1.     How to avoid racial discrimination?

Bars, clubs, or any food joint is an open place for every kind of public. Similarly, a person serving this public need not belong to one race. But, there might be certain situations wherein you might require staff that is either familiar with the locality or local language. Even then one should not be specifically mentioning this in the job advert, as the hospitality industry is open for all.

  1.     How to avoid disability discrimination?

Disabled candidates are as fit as an able normal candidate and this should be kept in mind by the employers while posting a job advert. To be righteous on the path, there should be no mention of any specific abilities or citing of any disabilities. Also being an employer you should ensure that your venue is wheelchair accessible and has specific facilities catering to all sorts of candidates. The hospitality industry is a sector that requires physical activity very evidently but this need not be mentioned in any of your job adverts.

  1.     How to avoid age discrimination?

Specifying age for job applicants is also big no during job advertisement. Certain words like youthful or young should not be mentioned as this could interpret a different meaning. So, it is better to avoid terms that refer to age specifications in job advertisements.
